A fine and rare early 18th Century silvered suite comprising of a settee and 6 side chairs, the upholstered seats and backs standing on cabriole front legs and well swept back legs, all united by shaped stretchers and all retaining their original silvered finish over carved gesso.
Late 17th Century lacquer cabinets were often put on European carved silvered stands, the fashion for silvering set as the English imitated solid silver furniture of Louis XIIII (practically all of which was broken up for bullion as he needed the money for his costly wars) There is a set of chairs and settee of similar form at Cannons Ashby in Warwickshire, a grand country house, that were supplied I think in 1714 just at the point that the cabriole leg was being introduced to England after a leg designed by Charles Andre Boulle.
